The Role
Reporting to the President & CEO of Saint Johnβs Health Center Foundation (SJHCF), the Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO) is a senior executive leader responsible for designing, executing, and overseeing a comprehensive philanthropy strategy in support of Saint Johnβs Health Centerβs mission, values, and strategic priorities.
As a key member of the senior leadership team, the CPO will help shape and advance SJHCFβs strategic plan while fostering a strong culture of philanthropy, stewardship, and community partnership. This role leads the development of a unified, high-performing, and agile foundation that leverages best practices, technology, and business intelligence to deliver transformative philanthropic support.
The CPO collaborates closely with the Foundation Board, health center leadership, physicians, caregivers, volunteers, donors, and community partners to inspire philanthropy and ensure long-term organizational sustainability.

What Youβll Do
- Lead Strategic Vision and Growth
- Develop and implement a comprehensive philanthropy strategy aligned with organizational priorities, community health goals, and long-term sustainability.
- Lead philanthropy growth efforts to achieve $50M annually, with clear benchmarks for donor acquisition, retention, upgrades, and campaign integration.
- Guide all philanthropic programs, including annual, major, planned, and principal giving; foundation relations; capital initiatives; and transformational gifts.
- Assess and strengthen infrastructure and programs such as grateful patient fundraising, donor pipeline development, and capital campaign planning.
- Monitor philanthropy trends and innovations to inform strategy and adopt best practices.
- Drive Operational Excellence
- Establish standardized policies, procedures, and performance metrics across all philanthropic activities.
- Build and oversee a data-driven fundraising program supported by prospect research, analytics, and reporting.
- Ensure development efforts are well planned, organized, and successful in meeting financial goals.
- Oversee annual operating budgets and ensure cost-effective use of philanthropic resources.
- Ensure compliance with all legal, ethical, and financial standards related to fundraising and stewardship.
- Partner with Finance, Operations, IT, Marketing, and Communications to optimize infrastructure and reporting.
- Engage and Steward Donors
- Maintain a personal portfolio of 50+ major donors.
- Cultivate and steward relationships with major donors, foundations, corporate partners, and community stakeholders.
- Oversee donor recognition, impact reporting, and personalized stewardship strategies.
- Represent Saint Johnβs Health Center Foundation at key philanthropic events and public forums.
- Build Relationships and Lead Teams
- Serve as a trusted relationship builder and collaborator across a complex healthcare and foundation environment.
- Build, lead, and develop a high-performing philanthropy team through mentoring, coaching, and professional development.
- Foster an inclusive, accountable, and collaborative culture aligned with organizational values.
- Serve as a catalyst for organizational change and continuous improvement.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and serve as a visible ambassador for healthcare philanthropy.

What Youβll Bring
- Education & Experience
- Bachelorβs degree required; Masterβs degree preferred.
- Ten (10) or more years of senior-level fundraising experience, including major gifts and capital or comprehensive campaigns.
- Ten (10) or more years of management experience in a sophisticated development organization, preferably in healthcare or higher education.
- Demonstrated experience leading large, diverse development teams.
- Experience with capital campaigns and comprehensive campaigns preferred.
- Experience with Blackbaud/Raiserβs Edge CRM preferred.
- Leadership Capabilities and Expertise
- Proven leadership ability with a track record of exceeding fundraising goals.
- Deep expertise in healthcare philanthropy, donor cultivation and stewardship, and major gift strategy.
- Strong strategic and analytical skills, including the ability to align philanthropy with institutional priorities.
- Exceptional communication, storytelling, and advocacy skills.
- Demonstrated success in cultivating, closing, and stewarding seven- and eight-figure gifts.
- Strong financial acumen related to philanthropic ROI and infrastructure investment.
- High emotional intelligence, integrity, and ethical decision-making.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and across all organizational levels.

Further, we want our leaders to live in or near the communities we serve.Β Therefore, leaders applying for this role will be required to work a hybrid schedule, which consists of three days onsite, two days remote and live within a reasonable commuting distance to the ministry or service area they support and lead.
