ROLE
We are seeking aΒ Public Affairs SpecialistΒ to support the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana (USAO-MT) in Billings, MT. In this role, you will provide strategic public affairs support for the USAO by guiding external communications, managing media engagement, and coordinating outreach efforts that advance public understanding of the office’s mission and priorities.

RESPONSIBILITIES
I. Media Strategy
  • Review the USAO media relations program and identify improvements to better achieve program goals
  • Recommend actions to the U.S. Attorney (USA) to increase understanding of the USAO mission and activities
  • Promote deterrence to crime through coordinated public information messaging
  • Encourage crime prevention and reporting through targeted public outreach communications
  • Inform the public about significant public safety issues through timely media engagement
  • Recognize the good work of USAO employees through appropriate external communications
II. Media Coordination
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with DOJ Office of Public Affairs to produce Public Service Announcements
  • Support USAO personnel in communicating with local and national news media and specialized groups
  • Coordinate news media interviews with USAO program staff
  • Organize press conferences and other media events to enhance the USAO's law enforcement message
  • Provide written and oral recommendations to the USA for responding to media requests & public inquiries
  • Monitor national and local media reports for USAO and law enforcement topics
  • Keep the USA and their designee informed of relevant media coverage and developments
  • Draft and edit press releases, talking points, and quotes
  • Develop supporting materials required to support USAO communications and outreach
III. Outreach & Events Support
  • Assist in coordinating special events, workshops, seminars, and meetings under the guidance of the USA or their designee
  • Stimulate participation in program activities with organizations engaged in USAO initiatives
  • Identify concerns from participating organizations to inform USAO program communications
  • Motivate organizations to conduct similar programs for their memberships
IV. Policy & Program Support
  • Support other federal agencies & DOJ components on USAO community relations activities
  • Furnish policy guidance for USAO program community relations activities
  • Develop directives for policies and procedures supporting USAO communications and outreach
  • Evaluate program effectiveness to support continuous improvement of USAO media and community relations efforts
V. District Program Operations Support
  • Participate in planning and implementation of other district programs and initiatives
  • Coordinate the design, development, and operation of district programs and initiatives
  • Maintain communication with program participants to support program execution
  • Facilitate meetings and training to support program activities
  • Provide operational support for district programs and initiatives

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge and understanding of the media process and deadlines
  • Ability to use internet software programs to upload and download information
  • Ability to maintain an internet site and manage social media
  • Ability to develop and maintain constructive relationships with stakeholders
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)

REQUIRED BACKGROUND
Ideal applicant must have one (1) of the following:
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or related
  • Equivalent experience in media relations

  • Billings, MT 59101

TELEWORK
  • Not eligible for telework

CLEARANCE
  • U.S. citizenship is required as it supports the U.S. federal government

CLIENT

TRAVEL
  • Travel is required

WORK HOURS
  • 40 hours
  • 8 hours a day
  • 5 days a week

Regularly required to sit for extended periods up to 100% of the time; frequently required to move about to access file cabinets and use office equipment such as PC, copier, fax, telephone, cell phone, etc. Occasionally required to reach overhead, bend, and lift objects of up to 10 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the use of computer monitor screens up to 100% of the time.
