The National Geographic Society, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is nearing completion of a transformation of its historic headquarters campus, known as Base Camp. Opening in 2026, the reimagined campus will include the Museum of Exploration (MOE)βa dynamic new cultural destination featuring a pavilion entrance, auditorium, iconic photo gallery, immersive exhibition space, walk-through experience, educational hub, archives, retail, food and beverage, and a new event venue. A one-of-a-kind nighttime experience in the courtyard will serve as the emotional centerpiece of the guest journey. A sustainably designed hotel may also be constructed on-site in partnership with a third-party operator.Your Impact
Responsibilities:
Email Production & Support (40%)
Assist in setting up, testing, and scheduling email campaigns in Salesforce Marketing Cloud, with guidance from senior team members.
Help track editorial calendars for email campaigns supporting MOE, National Geographic Live, Traveling Exhibitions, and Storytellers Collective.
Apply pre-approved segmentation and personalization rules to emails as directed.
Conduct quality checks on email layouts, links, and visuals across various devices and clients.
Support campaign reporting by collecting and formatting performance data for team review.
Maintain organized archives of email content and tracking documentation.
Website Content Assistance (25%)
Assist with content updates in Sanity CMS, including minor copy edits, image uploads, and event listings.
Support the rollout of web content tied to seasonal promotions or program launches.
Coordinate with internal teams to ensure program information on the website is current and accurate.
Help maintain update logs and link tracking for campaign pages.
Provide support for uploading content to landing pages and microsites as needed.
Editorial Coordination & Copy Support (20%)
Contribute to short-form marketing copy for email snippets, web modules, and banners under the supervision of content leads.
Assist in proofreading and formatting content for accuracy and brand alignment.
Help version content for different audience segments, geographies, or partner-specific needs.
Maintain internal reference documents for messaging, tone, and campaign content usage.
Campaign Workflow Assistance (15%)
Help coordinate timelines and content routing for internal reviews and approvals.
Update shared calendars, trackers, and asset logs to ensure transparency across teams.
Participate in campaign planning meetings and share delivery status updates as needed.
Capture internal feedback and assist in organizing insights for future campaign improvement.
What Youβll Bring
Educational Background
Bachelorβs degree in marketing, communications, journalism, digital media, or a related field preferred.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
2+ years of experience supporting digital marketing campaigns, with a focus on email development and/or website content coordination.
Experience working within nonprofit, media, cultural, or mission-driven organizations is preferred.
Necessary Knowledge and Skills
Familiarity with Salesforce Marketing Cloud or similar email platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Campaign Monitor); willingness to learn platform-specific tools.
Exposure to content management systems such as Sanity, WordPress, or similar tools is helpful but not required.
Basic understanding of email design principles, formatting, and responsiveness across devices.
Strong writing, proofreading, and editing skills for short-form content.
Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks with shifting priorities.
Clear communicator with a collaborative approach to cross-functional work.
Demonstrated interest in marketing, communications, or digital production, especially in a mission-driven or cultural environment.
Comfort with tools like Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and basic project management platforms (e.g., Monday.com, Trello).
Willingness to receive feedback, learn new skills, and contribute to a positive, team-oriented culture.

Salary Information
The National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar-sized nonprofit organizations.
The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

Job Designation
Resident - Our Resident category recognizes that certain staff need to be physically present at Base Camp to do their work. Some Resident staff must be at Base Camp every day to do their jobs, while others may only need to be physically present onsite some of the time to meet looming deadlines or to get work done and may require a unique schedule. As such, this category has been revised to provide maximum flexibility depending on whatβs required for each individual role. The days Resident staff come into the office will be determined by their teams and workflow, and they should work with their supervisors to determine their specific schedule. And throughout the year, their schedule may be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles, deadlines, and/or ebbs and flows of work.Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
