FUNCTION

This position is responsible for providing support to trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming youth (16-24 years old) experiencing homelessness as they navigate their transition journey.  

 

TOP  RESPONSIBILITIES

Supporting trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming youth

  • Initiate & hold space for open conversations about gender, transitioning, HRT, navigating transphobia, and gender affirming surgery.
  • Identify partnerships and programming that may benefit our trans* youth
  • Develop and facilitate group programming centered around trans* youth
  • Attend trainings to further develop trans knowledge, and understanding of available resources
  • Visit AFC’s Trans Housing site in Brooklyn 2x a month to provide care to youth in transitional housing

Gender Affirming Surgery Coordination

  • Collaborate with trans services coordinator on recovery options for youth receiving gender affirming surgery
  • Help youth look at surgeon options & schedule consultations
  • Support ordering recovery supplies & groceries for youth receiving surgery
  • Escort to and attend surgical consultations with youth
  • Escort to and pickup youth from surgical procedures
  • Escort and attend post op appointments with youth
  • Provide support and accompaniment to youth recovering from surgery at AFC housing sites, in coordination with medical providers and AFC clinical staff.
  • Collaborate across programs to create recovery plans Supporting Ali Forney Center Programs
  • Complete timely, accurate documentation of client encounters and intakes in agency data systems, in accordance with program and funder requirements.
  • Conduct agency intakes assessments.  
  • Attend weekly treatment planning meeting, weekly staff meetings, and individual supervision
  • Provide daily coverage in the Community Room and throughout drop-in, as needed. 
  • Develop relationships with NYC service providers, including but not limited to those addressing medical, mental health and housing needs. 

 



Qualifications

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or GED required

Undergraduate or equivalent lived/professional experience strongly preferred

 

PREFERRED SKILL & QUALITIES

  • Knowledge of medical transition
  • Experience and comfort being in community with trans* people
  • Knowledge of harm reduction principles and strategies
  • Able to navigate New York City independently
  • Comfortability with medical settings 
  • Comfortability with escorting AFC youth to appointments Competent communication & writing skills.
  • Comfortable talking about gender, sex and genitals
  • Compassionate, empathetic, and strong emotional intelligence

 

PREFERRED QUALITIES

  • Familiarity with NYC services
  • Ability to multitask and manage different priorities under pressure
  • Ability to work independently and with others
  • Ability to use resources to problem solve
  • Effective computer skills and proficiency Google Suite
